Welcome to Kappadu

India is a country with about 3.3 million square kilometers, ranges from the Himalayas to the tropics, with about 1. 2 billion people living. India is the seventh largest country in the world. And in terms of population, India is the second largest country after China. The subcontinent is as varied as any other country on earth. India is the largest democracy in the world, it has a total of 28 states and 22 recognized languages in addition to about 2,000 dialects. Kerala is one of the 22 states.

Kerala (Keralam) is a state on the Malabar Coast in southwest India. ‘Keralam’ translated means, the land of coconuts'. The Geography of Kerala is significant: in the West, the Malabar Coast as a 600 km long strip pulls along the Indian Ocean and is a wonderful window to the other parts of the world. Its advantageous location favored trade with Egypt, Syria, Greece and China for more than 3000 years. The size of Kerala is only 1.2% of the total area of India and it is hardly understandable that since very early centuries all major religions of the world gained a foothold here and lived harmoniously together.

Because of thispluralism Kerala is also called the "laboratory of human civilization", or "Mini-Globe", or "museum of all world religions of the world". In religious terms Kerala is mixed. Hindus represent 56.2 percent of the population, although the majority of the population, their share is significantly lower than the national average. There are also significant minorities of Muslims (24.7 per cent) and Christians (19.0 percent). The different faiths are already represented in Kerala for many centuries and largely exist peacefully side by side.

Our Abbey at Kappadu is situated near the town Kanjirappally, in the district of Kottayam.
